Web Watch is meant to inform you of some great websites, as well as to tell you a little about what is going on at SPL. Web Watch @ SPL - Home Improvements ========================================================================= Fall is upon us (already), and homeowners know all too well that there are always home repairs & improvements that should be finished before winter arrives! Below are some web sites which may be helpful either this fall or at a later date... "On the House" - www.onthehouse.com This is a great site for home improvement advice and information! Click on "Q & A" for practical info in many categories eg. insulation, basements & crawl spaces, gutters & downspouts. Be sure to check out the "Weekly Project", the "Tip of the Day", and other features. The Carey Brothers, who operate this site, also write a syndicated newspaper column by the same name, "On the House". "Canadian Home Workshop" - www.canadianhomeworkshop.com/ Subtitled "The Do-It-Yourself Magazine", Canadian Home Workshop (online) provides how-to info for repairs around the home, furniture projects, an "Ask a Pro" feature, and an Archives of articles to search. Also, you can access the current issue of this magazine. "Better Homes and Gardens" - www.bhg.com Consult the "Home Improvement Encyclopedia" for a step-by-step repair guide to your home's plumbing system, electrical system, etc. Advice for outdoor repairs is also included in this web site: roofs, patios, decks, etc., or click on "Garden" to find advice on fall maintenance & care of your home's lawns, trees and gardens. A glossary, calculators and some videos are also offered by BH&G. "Homeowner Resources" - www.repair-home.com/info/resource_menu.htm This resource provides "how to" directions and diagrams for various projects, etc. repairing holes in walls, replacing outlets, hanging wallpaper, building a deck, etc. This site offers various other features as well - Home Repairs Discussion Forums and conversion calculators are two examples. "This Old House"- www.thisoldhouse.com/ Click on "Homeowner Know-How" for all sorts of tips, "simple solutions" and information on maintaining your home's kitchen, bathroom, electrical and lighting systems, etc...just the areas where problems often arise! Exterior repairs, plus yard and garden maintenance are also included. Be sure to check out the "Weekend Projects" section! "Homestore.com" - www.homestore.com Find handy tips for indoor maintenance for each season of the year. Or, go to the very useful "Outdoor" section, featuring a Guide to Trees, a Rose Primer, landscaping projects, patio ideas, and lots of garage and driveway improvements. "Mrs. Fixit" - www.mrsfixit.com "It's just that simple!" Mrs. Fixit has all the answers to household problems and repairs - and you will too, after following her handy tips and instructions! "Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation" - www.cmhc.ca Click on "Building, Renovations and Maintaining" for advice and information on a wide range of topics, such as installing attic venting, fighting mold problems, dealing with UFFI, installing flooring and much more! "Handyman USA" - www.handymanusa.com/ Handyman USA covers the basics of household repairs, and also provides a forum for general questions, answers and advice, plus an "experts forum". "How to Clean Anything!" - www.howtocleananything.com This useful Vancouver-based web site is worth bookmarking, with solutions for many cleaning challenges! Organized into categories such as exterior cleaning, interior cleaning, pet cleaning, etc., the problems that are addressed range from grease-stained outdoor decks, to soiled clothing, to cloudy aquarium glass. An effort is made to suggest environmentally friendly solutions, and the user can also be linked with cleaning experts and a relevant search engine. ========================================================================= 2. Upcoming Events @ SPL ========================================================================= October 5, 7pm at Central United Church - Burgundy, Black and Gold: A Jazz Concert featuring The Jo Deslippe Quintet All proceeds from the concert and the CD sales will go to the Stratford Public Library Foundation in support of literacy programs. Tickets are $20 each and are available in advanced from the Stratford Public Library, Wandering Minstrel, SJ Mitchell Professional Corporation Chartered Accountant, and Music. October 8, 12-1pm in the SPL Library Auditorium - Poetry Festival The final speaker in the 2003 Poetry Festival, Joanne Page will be at the Library to discuss her poetry. Admission is $2.00 per person. October 15, 9:30am - Children's Program Registration Fall program registration will begin at 9:30am by phone only at 271-0220. October 19-25th - Ontario Public Library Week Visit http://www.stratford.library.on.ca/OPLW.htm for a listing of all the activities happening at the Stratford Public Library during OPLW, including Food 4 Fines. October 24, 9:30am-5pm - Donation Day The Library is happy to accept donations of gently used books, books on tape, compact discs and videos. Donations may be dropped off at the back door of the Library - just ring the buzzer. We also now collect comic books!
