WEB WATCH – MAY 2009: MUSEUM MONTH IN CANADA

Did you know that May is “Museum Month” in Canada?  Across Canada, museums in every province and territory preserve, interpret and display our heritage. There are museums to suit many diverse interests, such as railways, boats, the military, sports, our natural history, heritage gardening, and more.
Take a museum tour across Canada , from the west coast to the east, via the Internet!

The Royal British Columbia Museum
British Columbia is home to a wealth of history, as depicted at the Royal British Columbia Museum , located on the site of a First Nations meeting place with its many historic monumental poles.  The province of British Columbia is also home to more living species of plants and animals than any other Canadian province, with its mountains, valleys, grasslands, coasts and islands – and its wealth of natural history is also celebrated in the Museum’s exhibits. The RBC Museum ’s web site includes various online programs, kids’ activity sheets and a link to the British Columbia Archives.

The University of Alberta Vascular Plant Herbarium
Gardeners will be interested in the many lovely photos included on the web site of this teaching-research herbarium, one of the University of Alberta’s 35 museums / collections. The Herbarium has about 120,000 specimens of ferns, conifers and flowering plants. Searches for plants can be made by geographic location or by plant name.  Click on “Access and Procedures” for the herbarium’s Plant Collection Handbook, useful for those wishing to collect plant specimens.   You will also find links to various other herbariums and botanical gardens in Alberta.

The Western Canada Aviation Museum
Interested in historic planes? Check out some of the exhibits at the Western Canada Aviation Museum, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba - such as the Avro CF-100, the Canadair F-86 Sabre-Jet, the Eldorado Radium Silver Express, or the Vickers Viscount 700.  Some interesting links to online resources with further information are listed here.
2009 marks the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada, with the Silver Dart’s historic flight from Baddeck, Nova Scotia a century ago.  Canada has a number of aviation museums, such as the Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa, the Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum, or the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (the latter includes stories of those who flew Canada’s war planes).

The Stratford Perth Museum
When our local museum opens this summer in its new location at 4275 Huron Road (Highway #8 West), it will mark the first time that the Stratford Perth Museum has been located in its own facility instead of in shared or rented quarters.  From its beginning, the Stratford Perth Museum has offered a variety of exhibits, school programs and special events, with a mission of preserving and making accessible the rich history of Stratford and Perth County.

The Museum of Health Care at Kingston
Kingston’s Museum of Health Care has one of the largest collections of medical artefacts (more than 27,000) in Canada, ranging from surgical tools and laboratory instruments to bloodletting sets!   6000 of these artefacts have been digitally photographed. Search the database, or try to guess the “Artefact of the Month” or the object featured in “Close Up Corner”.   The Museum’s exhibits investigate not only Canada ’s medical history, but also the related social conditions of the times.

The Canadian Museum of Nature
One of the finest natural history museums in the world, the Canadian Museum of Nature, located in Ottawa , develops collections and exhibits which educate the public about trees, plants, animals, fossils, minerals, and even the air that we breathe. Click on Site Map and scroll down to find a list of current exhibits, including one of 3-D dinosaurs, climatic change, native plants, the Rideau River, a Bird Gallery, a Fossil Gallery, a Mammal Gallery, and many more. The Museum has also developed a number of exhibits and online resources specifically for children.

The Biosphere
The Biosphere is the only museum of water in North America dedicated to the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes.  As such, it seeks to educate the public about the importance of the St. Lawrence Ecosystem, wetlands and water and the necessity to protect them.   Located on Sainte Helene Island in Montreal, the “Sphere” is a unique geodesic dome structure, a design made famous by engineer/architect Richard Buckminster Fuller at the time of Expo ‘67.  Its many exhibits and features include water wonders, a marsh, an environmentally friendly wastewater treatment plant, a solar house and two wind turbines.

The McCord Museum of Canadian History
Some of the exhibits at Montreal’s McCord Museum are those featuring urban life, the history of Montreal, the Iroquois, the Irish heritage in Quebec, the Quiet Revolution, the Victoria Bridge, Norman Bethune, and many more.  A number of helpful student online resources for various history themes have been included on this web site, such as links, history texts, games, video clips, thematic tours and a large bank of pictures.

Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic and Home of the Bluenose II
The history of Nova Scotia ’s Bluenose is legendary, and today the Bluenose II is operated by the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society for the province. The Society also operates the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, located in the historic fishing community of Lunenburg (a UNESCO World Heritage Town) where you can learn about life in a traditional fishing community, about life at sea, about the whales found in this area of the Atlantic, and even about the historic practice of “rum running”. Click on the “Photo Gallery” to discover some of the highlights of the Fisheries Museum ’s collections, which serve to commemorate the immense historical importance of Atlantic Canada’s fishing industry.

The Museum of Industry, Stellarton, Nova Scotia
Not only does the Museum of Industry in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, hold over 37,000 artefacts which chronicle the history of coal-mining, steel making, research and other industries of this province, it is also the home of Canada’s oldest steam locomotive, the Samson. The size of seven hockey rinks, the Museum is actually located on the site of the former Foord Pit at Albion Mines, and is the largest museum in Atlantic Canada.  Over 160 historic images from Nova Scotia ’s vital mining history can be viewed online; click on “Men in the Mines”.
