Web Watch @ Your Library #17 - March 2005 - Other back Issues

A Bit of Everything!

Wow!  You can find almost anything on the Internet … almost!  Listed below is a  variety of intriguing web sites to peruse.

Rotten Tomatoes (Movies) www.rottentoma toes.com
The Tomato Picker isn’t afraid to rate a new film as “truly bad” or even moderately bad!   On this site, you can wade through the best and the worst of over 87,000 movies, including current releases and films on DVD and video.  Beware of any film awarded a “rotten” rating of below 60%!

Comedy Central www.comedycentral.com
Comedy Central is more than just a TV tie-in!  You can find hours and hours of online entertainment here, with Web shows, film shorts, games and downloads.  You might need lots of time when you enter this web site!

Pseudodictionary www.pseudodictionary.com
Browse through the made-up words and their definitions submitted by other visitors, or send in some of your own!  You’ll be sure to learn something from this original and lighthearted web site, which was created by Vancouver resident Paul Jarvis because of his love of slang!

The Phobia List www.phobialist.com
Can you define “atephobia” or “ranidaphobia”?  How about “melissophobia”?  Find the answers in the Phobia List, a very comprehensive A to Z of phobia names! (Cures and/or treatments for these many phobias are not found here.)

The Skinny On… www.discovery.com/area/skinnyon/skinnyon.html
This web site will give you “the skinny on” many unusual topics & questions, such as, “Where do fruit flies come from?”  “Why can bright lights make me sneeze?”  “Do some  people really go crazy when there is a full moon?” and “What colour is snow, really?”

eHow www.ehow.com
Look here to find out how to tie shoelaces, groom your pet rabbit, pan for gold, determine whether sushi is fresh, and lots more (that you might not have thought to ask in the first place…)!

Quackwatch www.quackwatch.com
The statement, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”, can be applied to health care.  Quackwatch, operated by a non-profit corporation to combat medical frauds, fads, fallacies and myths, brings to light mistakes and fraud in the area of health products and health care.

Holidays on the Net www.holidays.net/
Here’s an online source of interesting, in-depth and often humourous information on the many holidays celebrated around the world – religious, national and other.   Holiday origins, celebration facts, crafts and recipes, and more are covered.  Be sure to check out “Fun and Wacky Daily Holidays”!

Despair Inc. www.despair.com
A web site name like this simply begs to be explored!  The hilarious de-motivating messages found in this collection of posters, calendars and plaques will certainly motivate you to laugh and perhaps you may wish to order for a friend or co-worker!   For example, “Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!”
