WEB WATCH – JULY 2009: DROWNING PREVENTION WEEK AND SUMMER SAFETY

Summer brings beautiful weather, but unfortunately it also brings the increased risk of some types of accidents, as highlighted by National Drowning Prevention Week, observed in the third week of July. For a safer summer, check out the following links:

The Lifesaving Society - Canada
Tips to reduce the likelihood of water-related injuries and drowning are provided by the Life Saving Society of Canada.  These include tips for water safety in backyard pools, at the cottage, and while boating or fishing.

Smart Risk
Smart Risk offers tips for boating safety, safer golfing, safety while driving, avoiding poisoning from contact with venomous plants and animals, and more, as well as tips to reduce accidents in the home – especially with children. This web site is designed for adults, teachers and youth.  Of special interest to gardeners is a section on safe gardening.

Blue Flag Beaches and Marinas
How safe is the water where you and your family swim or boat?  Find Ontario’s Blue Flag beaches on Lakes Erie, Ontario, Huron/Georgian Bay. The Blue Flag label is awarded to those beaches where frequent water testing for E coli is meeting strict Blue Flag standards – an assurance that the water is safe for swimming.  Also, locate Ontario ’s three Blue Flag marinas, all situated on Lake Huron/Georgian Bay.

Safe Canada.ca
This extensive web site provides information about safety around campfires, while swimming, boating, cycling or on a scooter, during heat and smog alerts, with severe summer weather, sun safety, safety while hiking or camping, while roller blading or skateboarding, avoiding Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus, and more.

Bicycling Safety
The Perth District Health Unit’s web site offers links to information on safe cycling, such as Safe Kids Canada and the Canadian Safety Council, which address smart cycling practices, bicycle and helmet selection and the safe use of child carriers.

Playground Safety
Check out Safe Kids Canada’s tips to “Keep your Kids Safe on the Playground” and learn what you can do to make the next visit to the playground safer for your young child.  Other information about child safety can be found here.

The Farm Safety Association
The Farm Safety Association is one of Ontario’s key safety associations, providing information about safe farming practices for adults, youth and children.  Heat and sun safety are also addressed.  For more information about farm safety, please visit the Farm Safety section of the Perth District Health Unit’s web site.

Safe Barbecue Practices
Summer barbecuing offers a welcome change to outdoor cooking.  However, heat and humidity create conditions in which bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli can multiply quickly. The web site of the Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education offers numerous tips on food preparation to minimize the risk of microbial foodborne illnesses.  One of its many features is a special section on food safety for kids (click on either Learning Centre or Downloads).

Food Safety - Public Health Agency of Canada
The Canadian Public Health Agency’s web site offers more information about Listeria, E coli, Salmonella and other causes of foodborne illnesses, which unfortunately, increase in warm weather conditions.

St. John Ambulance
Learn more about safety!  The Stratford-St. Marys chapter of the St. John Ambulance offers a variety of first aid, CPR and safety courses for home, work or school, available to people in our community.
